All of our Queen bees are marked
To mark a Queen we find her which can take some time and then mark her on the thorax with a queen marking pen.
Queen bee marking is usually done for two reasons. The first is that with the Queen bee marked she is usually easier to find when you look for her. I am keen on having the Queen bee marked as finding an unmarked Queen bee can prove quite difficult.
The other main reason the Queen bee is marked is that the colour she is marked with signifies which year she was born or raised in. The colour system used for the marking of Queen bees has been established by international convention, as follows:
one colour is used to signify a season. For example, yellow is designated for 2022 i will use yellow from april untill Autumn 2022, and then start the new season in april 2023 using red right through until the end of the season in Autumn 2023. We also mark the lid of the hive with the Queen year and date marked.
